For most students the university stage is a stimulating and successful
experience. For others it may be a period of stress, anxiety or depression. The
time of examinations is the largest index of cases. A 20.84 % of the university
ensures suffer high levels of anxiety to confront the academic evidence,
according to a study conducted with 28,559 students from 16 universities in
Spain in 2005 and published in the journal Education.
The situations of tension and nervousness are common in the campus; the
university is a large jump in the demand academic and triggers the self
discipline. "Everyone feels anxiety before the tests, it is a common reaction.
Sometimes, it is even desirable because it allows us to pay more. The problem is
when it is given continuously and interferes with the academic and personal
level," says Ignacio Fernández, a psychologist at the University Clinic of
Psychology at the University Complutense of Madrid.
How can you identify? There are symptoms that are readily observable: intense
nervousness from the physiological point of view (palpitations, muscle tension
or increase sweating); acceleration of thought; anticipation of future failures;
lock (which can sometimes lead to the student does not want to go to the
classroom); problems sleeping; stomach disorders or increased irritability.
There are mild cases that are handled with three or four patterns and other more
serious requiring therapy, drug therapy or both, says Ignacio Fernández, which
ensures that the time of examinations students come to the clinic anymore from
the Universidad Complutense.
The first thing you must do is to consult an expert to obtain a diagnosis.
"There are students who are so afraid to suspend that they leave to go to class,
are left blank during the test or does not perform to the hour of study". To
avoid these extremes, Fernandez recommends improving the planning and objectives
should be set to short, medium and long term. Daily or weekly goals. "You must
choose a convenient space for the study and that is unique to that activity. In
addition, it is important to plan the study sessions: start with content of
medium difficulty, then finally high and low". It is a good idea to schedule
breaks of about 30 minutes to combat fatigue and reserve hours for leisure and
relaxation to pay more the next day and sleep better.
