If Germans pay abroad fees, students without European Union-passport are to do
that in the future also here. Two rectors demand that. Are talents scared off in
such a way?
Overfilled lecture-rooms or long latencies, then the experience of many students
in Germany looks. Remedy is possibly to be created at the expense from at
present more than 200,000 visiting students from the foreign country. That
suggested anyhow the president of the technical University of Munich (TUM),
Wolfgang A. Herrmann, in an interview with Münchner Merkur. Whether in America,
Australia, England or Switzerland – in all world universities take high fees,
also from German students. Therefore international applicants will not even
weight “”, if they are asked in this country to the cash, say Herrmann. It
thinks the majority of the foreigners at its university of students without
European Union-passport. For European Union-Bürgergilt however same right as for
German high school graduates, who must pay study fees starting from coming
winter semester in no more Federal state.
Herrmann is not first and not the only one, which pleads for a foreigner toll on
the campus. Those demands likewise its colleague of the technical university
Aachen, Ernst Schmachtenberg, in the discussion with TIME of ONLINE. And one
year ago also the chairman of the Green parliamentary group in the federal state
parliament of Baden-Wuerttemberg for fees already promoted. The TUM president
aims now at the coalition agreement of the Federal Government. Therein it means:
“By the end of the decade we want to ensure that the number of foreign studying
is increased by approximately a third on approximately 350,000.” Remains
contentious, who is to pay that. Already the support of foreigners at German
universities is often unsatisfactory. For the universitypolitical spokeswoman of
the SPD state tag opposition in Bavaria, Isabell Zacharias, is certain: Herrmann
is to ask not “students from Turkey or China to the cash, but his Prime
Ministers Seehofer”, thus the taxpayer. More than twenty percent of the students
are foreigners Hermann remain sceptical, as much giver mood from the policy is
to be expected to. More than twenty percent of its students are foreigners, whom
prospective customers “from Erding, mix, Fürstenfeldbruck”, the region or
completely Germany displace. He is afraid the question about a ratio, if not
EUROPEAN Union citizens in Germany would study further free of charge. The
president of the Munich Ludwig Maximilians university does not divide this
concern, at its university studies however also relatively few foreigners.
Therefore Herrmann would like that each university was to decide in the fee
question. The TUM anyhow needs the large number of international talents and
excellent equipment, in order to be able to keep up as research university in
the world leaders.
